Effectively Treat Cold and Flu Symptoms with Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine

cold and flu 150x150 Effectively Treat Cold and Flu Symptoms with Traditional Chinese Herbal MedicineWe are still in the flu & cold season and I continue to be amazed at how many people either don’t know or forget how incredibly effective Traditional Chinese herbal medicine is in quickly resolving these symptoms. In my 37 years of working in the medical field, including 26 years as a Licensed Acupuncturist, I have not found any medicine, vitamin, or nutritional supplement that works as well as the appropriately selected Chinese herbal formula.

What kind of results can you expect from using chinese herbal formulas for treating colds and flus?

On the average if a person begins taking Chinese herbs at the first sign of a cold, such as slight body ache, slight tickle in the throat, heavy eyes, and tired; most folks will see the symptoms completely disappear in 24 to 48 hours.

If a cold or flu has set in with distinct symptoms of sore throat, body ache, profuse phlegm and mucous production, and coughing, the appropriate formula will greatly relieve the symptoms and shorten the duration of the symptoms with resolution in 3 to 5 days depending on the veracity of virus.

Sometimes there are residual phlegm and cough symptoms that persist after the flu symptoms are gone. This would require yet a different formula and can usually be resolved in 3 to 5 days. All of this occurs with greatly reduced symptoms and improved general function.

More on Why Traditional Chinese Medicine is so Effective

One of the reasons that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is so effective is because of the unique and comprehensive medical model that has developed over the past 5000 years. In the case of your common flu or cold, one of the first things an acupuncturist will differentiate is if the symptoms are primarily hot or chilled. Hot symptoms would include things like higher fever, yellow mucous, sweating, restlessness, and severe sore throat. Chill symptoms include the desire to keep warm, white or clear mucous, body aches, tired, sleepy, and mild sore throat.

TCM treatments use herbs that create the opposite effect. For instance a virus that creates a chill condition would respond well to a warm herb like ginger. A hot condition would be better treated with a cool herb like peppermint. Thinking about herbs, foods, and our body’s condition in these terms is really a new experience for us in the West. But when we understand the rules, simple knowledge from this ancient time tested wisdom can have a profound effect on our health.

The bottom line is this, if you start to feel a bit ill, get in to see your family acupuncturist and get on the right Chinese herbal formula immediately. The longer you wait the longer it takes to get well.

Acupunturist and Chinese Herbal Medicine

Licensed Acupuncturists are the only medical professionals trained in how to diagnose and properly utilize Traditional Chinese herbal medicine. For these conditions results are generally great, and as with all forms of medicine nothing works 100% for 100% of the population. Always consult your medical professional if things are not resolving.
