Essential Nutrients and Accessory Nutrients – How Nutrients Work Together

Essential Nutrients

Essential nutrients are needed for life and must be obtained from food – your body cannot make them on its own. The main currently known essential nutrients include:

Essential vitamins are usually divided between water soluble and fat soluble.

Water soluble essential vitamins:

  • C
  • B1
  • B2
  • B5
  • B6
  • B12
  • folic acid (B9)
  • biotin (B7)

The fat soluble essential vitamins are:

Essential minerals include:

  • calcium
  • magnesium
  • phosphorus
  • iron
  • zinc
  • copper
  • manganese
  • iodine
  • chromium
  • potassium
  • sodium
  • copper
  • and trace elements

Low levels of essential nutrients are linked to all manner of disease. As the late Dr. Cavanaugh of Cornell University, in his time perhaps the world’s top food chemist, said often “Their is only one major disease, and that is malnourishment … you cannot get proper nutrition from food crops grown on depleted soils.”

Essential amino acids and essential fatty acids are needed for cell health and regeneration. Click on these links for more detailed information:

  • essential amino acids
  • essential fatty acids

Accessory Nutrients

There are many non-essential nutrients that actually are necessary co-factors for maintaining health and for your body’s ability to breakdown and utilize food and eliminate waste. All of your organs need a daily array of both essential and non-essential nutrients. Some of the more widely known non-essential nutrients include:

  • choline
  • inositol
  • Co-enzyme Q10
  • lipoic acid
  • PABA
  • non-essential amino acids
  • Enzymes (specialized living proteins needed for all body chemical reactions)
  • Beneficial bacteria (probiotics needed for nutrient assimilation)

How Nutrients Work Together

Many vitamins and minerals help convert food into energy and make the chemical and electrical circuitry of the body work. Other nutrients help protect the body from toxic damage and free radical waste that can damage the body and set the stage for degenerative diseases. Every year we are learning more about what combination of nutrient supplementation is best under various circumstances.
