Happy Heart Health, by Dr. Ramsey

Not just because it’s Valentine’s Day, but because you are worth it – Here are three of the most important Healthy Heart Tips for you and your Valentine!

My favorite recipe is to daily drink a mixture of the following ingredients:
Berries – your choice – about 1 cup
½ banana
Cocao – Organic Powdered Cacao – 2-4 Tablespoons (stay high if you are not sensitive to stimulants, low if you are sensitive – however, the more you can tolerate in a day, the greater the benefits)
Water to desired consistency – I usually use about ¾ cup
1 scoop of InflamMeal
5-7 drops of plain liquid clear Stevia
Blend together in a Magic Bullet of a Vitamixer. Adjust with water and Stevia for desired consistency and taste.
Other foods that are excellent for heart health besides dark greens due to their antioxidants and essential fatty acids are olive oil, oats, salmon and avocados.

As far as exercise goes – any exercise that allows you to feel energized rather than depleted is strengthening. If you don’t exercise at all, but you have a heart condition, consider a sitting exercise called “conducting the band”. In this exercise you literally pretend to orchestrate music. With your arms above your heart/shoulders move arms in a way as if you are a band director. Move them constantly for at least one song – as long as you can. This is specific for heart strengthening.

Minimizing stress is essential for heart health as well. Stress targets the heart with high cortisol and insulin levels. I’ll share just one breathing technique that will decrease stress hormones quickly. You can do this while sitting in the bathroom or if you are mindful and make the time, do this when you wake up and before bed. It is called nostril breathing. Hold your hand up in front of your face. You will use your pinky and your thumb alternately to obstruct your nostrils. Start and end with your left nostril. Start by inhaling through your left nostril while occluding your right. Exhale through your right nostril while occluding your left. Continue holding your left nostril and inhale back up through your right and then exhale through your left while occluding your right. Inhale through the left and exhale through the right. Do this alternating breath for ten minutes morning and night and anytime you have at least a minute alone throughout the day.

The most important supplements to use for heart health are the following:

CoQ10 – This is an enzyme that is especially necessary in metabolically active tissue. The heart is the most metabolically active tissue in the body, meaning that it requires the most nutrients to do its work. Without CoQ10, the heart muscle will always be weak regardless of all other nutrient levels. It is essential for energy production within the heart. Foods that contain the highest amount of CoQ10 are organ meats like liver, kidney and heart.

DHA fish oil – Although both EPA and DHA are cardio protective, DHA has been proven to be more useful for all heart ailments as documented in the most recent literature. A minimum dosage of 1000 mg of pure DHA is suggested – up to 3000 mg daily in divided dosages.
Hawthorn – is an herb, also known as craetaegas. Hawthorne both increases the strength of your heart contraction while also allowing deeper relaxation between beats and therefore decreases blood pressure. Specifically it improves oxygenation, improves blood flow through the heart arteries due to vasodilation.

Magnesium – is one of the most important minerals in the body and is stored in the red blood cells. It is not uncommon to measure deficient levels on the RBC in cardiac patients. This essential mineral relaxes the heart, increases circulation to it and also minimizes stress hormones.

Fiber – pulls out the unhealthy cholesterol from the body, thereby minimizing plaque buildup. The best mixture so far to protect the heart which includes fiber is Cinnamon flavor Fiberlicious mixed with magnesium powder taken once daily. It tastes great and maximizes elimination of waste while increasing magnesium which helps with relaxation.
