WATER and RENEWAL

Water

RENEWAL is an acronym which stands for Rest, Environment, Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Alternatives and Limits which are the principles needed to gaining Health & Wellness. These precepts keep you healthy and can reverse symptoms of illness. This article will concentrate on Water.

Without adequate water we die. When you fail to give your body enough water it takes water from less vital areas such as the skin, joints, bones and gives it to the brain, heart and other organs. People can go most of their lives partially dehydrated – resulting in premature aging, stress on kidneys, arthritis and more. About 75% of Canadians are chronically dehydrated, older people are more susceptible to dehydration. You actually use 40,000 cups of water a day, the body amazingly recycles the water over and over again. Therefore if you are not providing a fresh supply the body will retain water.

You should not wait until you are thirsty to drink water, by that time researchers say you are already dehydrated, in addition, 37% of people mistake thirst feelings for hunger. So before snacking, try water. Symptoms of dehydration include: headache, fatigue, confusion, loss of appetite, flushed skin, heat intolerance, lightheadedness, dry mouth and eyes, lack of skin elasticity, stomach pains (could be confused for hunger), and slower metabolism which can result in weight gain. Severe dehydration is life-threatening.

Treatment for high blood pressure may only consist of water, because 83% of your blood is water. Often when we are not getting enough water, our blood becomes concentrated, sluggish and sticky; demanding the heart to pump harder and faster to move blood and nutrients to areas of our bodies, this can result in high blood pressure.

Water is great for diabetes. The risk of heart disease is lower by 46-59% for people who drink enough water. Obesity, urinary track health, arthritis and joint pain, digestive health and brain fog are all improved by drinking more water.

You can drink too much water; this causes low blood sodium levels and can lead to brain swelling and even death. As a rule, do not drink more than 48 oz. of water an hour or 400 oz. of water a day.

Clean, pure, soft water is best. Water can be distilled or rigorously filtered to rid it of minerals and impurities and to make it soft.

Each person’s water needs are different. I often suggest to clients they drink 1/2 their weight (lb.) in ounces a day. So if you weigh 200lb. you should drink 100oz. or 3.125L a day. However, there are a number of factors that can increase your need for water. As a guide:

Drink until your urine is very light yellow or totally clear.

Water dilutes gastric juices — for best digestion drink water 15-30 minutes before meals and 1-2 hrs. after.

Water is vital to keeping your body, mind and soul well. You deserve to experience wellness, I can help.
