What Exactly is Adult Stem Cell Therapy?Adult stem cells can be harvested from your bone marrow, fat tissue, peripheral blood and elsewhere in your body. This harvesting procedure is legal in the United States and Canada.

Same day ASC therapy involving harvesting of adult stem cells primarily from your fat or bone marrow tissue, isolating beneficial stem cells, activating these stem cells, and re-infusing them by targeted injection or IV therapy is allowed in the US when represented and performed properly. The protocol practiced in these offshore clinics involve harvesting your stem cells, sending them to a lab (often not part of the clinic and sometimes not in same country) where they are purified, assessed for quality, and multiplied. They are then returned to the treating clinic for reintroduction to the patient. Since the stem cells come from the patient, there is no possibility for rejection as with donor adult stem cells or modified embryonic stem cells. Many of these clinics do not use the patient’s own stem cells but rather use 3rd party donor ASCs. Use of 3rd party ASCs is not the preferred approach and could potentially cause long-term harm. The risk of rejection or mutation is always of concern when foreign matter is introduced to a patient.

ASCs Are Not All The Same

ASC potency has five strengths or definitions.

  1. Totipotent (a.k.a omnipotent) stem cells can differentiate into embryonic and extraembryonic cell types. Such cells can construct a complete, viable, organism. These cells are produced from the fusion of an egg and sperm cell. Cells produced by the first few divisions of the fertilized egg are also totipotent.
  2. Pluripotent stem cells are the descendants of totipotent cells and can differentiate into nearly all cells.
  3. Multipotent stem cells can differentiate into a number of cells, but only those of a closely related family of cells.
  4. Oligopotent stem cells can differentiate into only a few cells, such as lymphoid or myeloid stem cells.
  5. Unipotent cells can produce only one cell type, their own, but have the property of self-renewal which distinguishes them from non-stem cells (e.g. muscle stem cells).

Adult stem cell treatments have been successfully used for many years to treat various diseases. Exaggerated claims seem widespread so caution is warranted, especially for vulnerable late disease stage patients.

Adult stem cells have also been widely used for decades in veterinary medicine to treat tendon and ligament injuries in horses. In the past 10 years, availability for this same day procedure in the US for human musculoskeletal injuries and degeneration has increased with stem cell clinics operating quietly in at least a half dozen states today.

DISCLAIMER ON THE FOLLOWING DIAGRAM: We are not satisfied that the science has evolved sufficiently to justify the use of stem cell therapy for many of the conditions listed in the following “Potential uses of Stem cells” diagram. Be cautious when considering experimental ASC treatments for a wide range of serious degenerative conditions as there may be some practitioners emerging outside the US and within the US who are not patient benefit focused professionals and who may be financially motivated and therefore prone to over-recommend ASC treatments. Also be aware that the impact of ASC treatment is never immediate, as it generally takes 4 or more months to assess whether ASC therapy is proving beneficial. This is particularly why the surrounding treatment plan and overall patient protocol is so important, and also why, when done correctly, regenerative medicine makes it difficult to isolate the exact treatment elements that stimulate patient improvement.
