Carnitine (L-Carnitine)
Carnitine, known as an energy generating powerhouse, is a “free amino acid” which has been found to improve fat metabolism in the heart and other organs and tissues, reduces triglyceride and cholesterol levels, improves heart-muscle tolerance, prevents irregular heartbeat and angina, provides more energy for the heart and helps lower blood pressure.
Carnitine preserves, at least partially, learning and memory from the natural decay occurring with age. Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) research shows the following: Compared to Alzheimer’s patients on placebo, acetyl-L-carnitine-treated patients showed significantly less deterioration in their Mini-Mental Status and Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale test scores. Improvements in spatial memory. Attenuates some age-related cognitive deficits and may have a beneficial effect on longevity. Improves cognitive performance and affects spatial memory and nerve-growth-factor levels. ALC benefits various cognitive functions in the middle-aged and elderly and is a metabolic cofactor Rescues aged neurons, perhaps by increasing their responsiveness to neuronotrophic factors in the CNS.
ALC has also been shown to help prevent the formation of lipofuscin, an age pigment, and to increase cerebral-blood flow. Treats age-related macular degeneration. Reduces metabolic abnormalities induced by alcohol. Studies have shown that ALC helps protect the brain by nourishing glutamate receptors, which normally decline with age. Reverses biochemical and behavioral parameters of brain aging.
Carnitine helps maintain myocardial function. Improves metabolic function while decreasing oxidative stress. Normalizes age-dependent disturbances such as membrane-lipid metabolism and/ or composition. Reduces age-associated deterioration in auditory sensitivity and improves cochlear function.
