L-Carnitine – free amino acid

Carnitine supplementation is most often used to help fight weight gain and increased fat lipid levels by increasing the body’s capacity to burn fat into energy. However recent research shows an array of benefits from Carnitine supplementation including:

  • improved mood
  • increased energy
  • less fatigue
  • stronger immunity
  • helps protect against nuerodegenerative disease
  • may help cardiovascular system function.

Various forms of carnitine have different effects. Acetyl-L-Carnitine is the most widely known and studied but propionyl-L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine arginate are different forms of the base L-carnitine compound with different benefits.

BRAIN FUNCTION AND PERFORMANCE

Acetyl-L-carnitine is readily absorbed from the intestines and crosses the blood brain barrier to improve mitochondrial use of fatty acids. This increases energy production in cells and improves their function. Carnitine helps protect nerve growth and function too. Research shows carnitine, especially when in combination with antioxidants such as Alpha Lipoic Acid and Vitamin C, helps impropve brain function and decrease the progression of Alzheimers and other neurodegenerative disorders. It may help Autism, ADD and ADHD.

Studies have shown memory improvements from regular carnitine use as well.

Depression and Mood

Studies in 2002 and 2004 showed improvements in mood and decreased depression rating scales for people supplemented with carnitine. One study involved men with high brain fat metabolite levels associated with aging and the other study involved cancer patients. Improvements occurred within one week of supplementation from better sleep, less fatigue and other quality of life improvements.

Fatigue – Mental and Physical

A decline in energy levels is probably the most common aging symptom. Doctors hear patients complain about low energy every day. Most doctors are at a loss in treating low energy – fortunately many are learning to use carnitine and other superfood supplementation to help defend against the cascade of age related problems often first occurring as fatigue.

Multiple Sclerosis causes severe muscle fatigue. In a 3 month study conducted in 2004, MS patients using carnitine experienced better results than patients using a common drug amantadine. The researchers concluded L-carnitine was superior to pharmacuetical drugs used for MS muscle fatigue.

In another 2004 study involving patients diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, significant improvements were found in the majority of participants quickly using 2000mg of carnitine daily.

Neuropathy

Many things can cause neuropthy including infections and diabetes. Symptoms of neuropathy include weakness, numbness and pain. Cancer drugs including chemotherapy and HIV medicines cause neuropthy. Many studies have shown benefit by use of carnitine for those suffering from neuropathy.

Diabetic neuropathy is painful and can cause a loss of limbs. Despite noticeable improvements in carnitine use studies, most doctors today treating diabetics are not encouraging use of carnitine and synergistic antioxidant nutrients.

Studies as recent as 2009 confirm benefits of various forms of carnitine for wide variety of muscle and nerve damage and decay conditions.

Heart Benefits

Blood circulation improvements are associated with carnitine supplementation. Since carnitine has long been associated with improving muscle performance and energy production, it shoudl come as no surprise that researchers in numerous studies from 1996 to 2004 concluded carnitine helped heart performance and recovery after heart attacks. The PLC form of carnitine showes particular benefit in helping repair heart tissue damage.

Sexual Performance

In does not take a rocket scientist to connect the dots … improved blood flow … improved energy … improved mood … improved muscle performance … to conclude as studies have that carnitine also helps male sexual performance. Carnitine will likely find it way into more male potency formulations and female ones as well.
